attracting hummingbirds
If you are trying to attract hummingbirds to your yard, there are a few things you can do (in addition to hanging a feeder) that will help lure those amazing little creatures to your space.
- plant flowers and shrubs that attract hummingbirds (ask us
for suggestions) - select plants with successive bloom periods to provide the longest period of available nectar
- hummingbirds are very attracted to large clusters or clumps of flowers
- provide perching places for the birds to rest on (dead limbs are perfect)
- make sure there is a water source for bathing (bird baths and ponds are perfect)
- avoid insecticides as they often eliminate the insects which provide protein to the hummingbirds
- keep hummingbird feeders away from areas where cats might hide
Don’t worry if you don’t see as many hummingbirds at your feeders while there are flowers blooming in your yard. They are still there – they just prefer natural nectar to the artificial nectar in a feeder.
